Maruti Suzuki has sold 50,000 cars with the Auto Gear Shift (AGS) or Auto Manual transmission (AMT), since its introduction at the 2014 Auto Expo in Delhi. AGS was first offered with the Celerio and is now available on the Alto K10.
The introduction of the AMT technology to budget cars has made automatic cars quite accessible. The Auto Manual transmission operates using an electric-hydraulic actuator that automatically performs clutch and shift operations. The user gets the best of both worlds – comfort of an automatic and the efficiency of a manual transmission car. This is evident as 25 per cent of the combined sales of the Celerio and the Alto K10 are driven by AMT variants.
Other manufacturers have started offering the AMT and in this list are products like the Tata Zest, Tata Nano, Mahindra TUV300 and the Fiat Abarth 595.
