Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has announced that they sold 62,996 factory-fitted CNG vehicles overall in FY 2014-15. This shows a growth of 23 per cent in comparison to the sales numbers of last year.
The manufacturer also disclosed that the contribution of CNG vehicles to their total sales rose to 5.4 per cent from 4.9 per cent in FY 2013-14. The company says that CNG is a cleaner fuel and emits a negligible amount of PM10 and PM2.5. Almost 50 per cent sales of WagonR, Eeco and Ertiga are accounted for by the CNG variants in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, where distribution infrastructure is in place and CNG for automobiles is available.
Maruti Suzuki is the first company to introduce factory-fitted CNG cars in India in 2010. At present the carmaker offers six dual fuel (CNG+Petrol) models namely Alto, Alto K-10, Celerio, Wagon R, Eeco and Ertiga. The CNG variants of Alto K-10 and Celerio were launched in 2014-15. With more and more Indian consumers opting for alternate fuel, we can expect the demand of CNG cars to keep on increasing.
