Maruti Suzuki S-Cross launched in India at Rs 8.34 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross has been launched in India for Rs 8.34 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).  The top-spec variant retails for Rs 13.74 lakh.  It is available in eight variants, two diesel engine options, and five colours. The car will be retailed through the Indo-Japanese automaker’s Nexa chain of showrooms set up exclusively to sell their premium range of vehicles.

Externally, the India-spec S-Cross is exactly the same as its European counterpart. It gets a double slat chrome grille with wide projector headlamps and LED DRLs to up the premium factor. To add to the muscle factor in the design, Maruti Suzuki has included pseudo bash plate elements in the front and rear while roof rails have been fitted to give the car a higher stance. There is minimum badging and wrap around tail lamps for the rear.

The cabin gets all the standard Suzuki elements and even the cabin layout is quite similar to what is seen on the other models. However, given that this is their first premium vehicle some of the standard features on the top-spec Alpha 1.6 variant include climate control, 2-DIN touchscreen infotainment system, digital information display in the instrument cluster and steering mounted audio controls. 

On the engine front, the S-Cross is being offered with a 1.6-litre diesel engine (a.k.a DDiS 320) and a 1.3-litre diesel mill (a.k.a DDiS 200). The former produces 120bhp and 320Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed MT while the latter is the Multijet unit that produces 90bhp and 200Nm of torque and is mated to a five-speed MT. The DDiS 200 has an ARAI specified fuel efficiency of 23.65kmpl while the DDiS 320 has an effciency of 22.07kmpl.

The S-Cross is Maruti Suzuki’s entry into the rapidly expanding compact crossover market where it will compete with vehicles like the Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta and the Nissan Terrano. As we had said earlier, it is their first premium vehicle and big effort to move beyond their image of being a manufacturer of small mass market hatchbacks.
