- Produces over 2 crore cars in 34 years and five months
- Holds over 50 per cent market share in India
- Outperforms Suzuki Japan which sold similar numbers in 45 years and nine months
The country’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has manufactured over 2 crore cars in India since its inception in 1983. Currently, with over 50 per cent of the market share, it comes as no surprise that the company has managed to add this new feather to its hat in just about 34 years and five months. Interestingly, Suzuki Japan required 45 years and nine months to achieve a similar feat. A bright red Swift hatchback has emerged as the 20 millionth car to be produced in India which was rolled out from the company’s Sanand facility in Gujarat.
Some of the major contributors to this impressive sales numbers have been the Alto with 3.17 million units, Maruti 800 with 2.91 million units, Wagon R at 2.13 million units and the Omni with 1.94 million sales. Among the newer generation models, cars like Swift, Dzire, Baleno and the Vitara Brezza have been considerable contributors to the overall sales.
Maruti Suzuki had crossed the first million milestone way back in 1994 and went on to sell four million more cars by the end of the next decade. By 2011, the company had reached the 10 million milestone and today in 2018 has crossed the 20 million production milestone in India.
