After launching the top-end ZXi variant of the Celerio with an AMT gearbox, Maruti Suzuki might now introduce the innovative clutchless transmission in its popular B-segment hatchback – the Swift. Rumours doing rounds of the internet suggest that the Swift AMT is already in development and will be launched in India before the end of this year.
The Swift is offered with two engine options – a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine and a 1.2-litre VVT petrol engine. While the AMT gearbox is currently available only in petrol variants of the Celerio and the Alto K10, earlier reports indicate that Maruti Suzuki will offer the AMT transmission only in diesel variants of the Swift. Though the company hasn’t given an official statement on this, it does seem like a plausible reason for why it is taking so long to introduce the gearbox in the Swift.
The AMT gearbox has turned out to be a roaring success for Maruti Suzuki as the technology’s ease of use coupled with a good marketing strategy has gained favour among the Indian customers. Besides the Swift, Maruti Suzuki is also expected to launch the AMT gearbox in the Wagon R and the Stingray models, very soon.
