Maruti Suzuki has launched the Alto 800 petrol for an introductory price of Rs 2.6 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) and CNG variant for Rs 3.3 lakh in Mumbai. Based on the same platform as it predecessor, the Alto 800 is one of the first cars being offered by the Maruti Suzuki to incorporate its wavefront design.
Developed at a cost of Rs 470 crore over a four year period, the small car is 3.3 meters in length and 1.4 meters in width. It has now been given thinner body panels, a taller roof and better packaging resulting in more headroom and shoulder room. The scooped out back of the front seat improves the rear leg room by over 15 mm.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 will be powered by the same F8D 796cc engine that powers the current Alto which produces 48bhp and 69Nm of torque. The BS4 compliant engine will return an ARAI tested 22.74 kmpl for the petrol model, a 15 per cent increase over its predecessor. The CNG variant will feature a factory fitted Intelligent Gas Port Injection (i-GPI) kit and will return 30.64 kilometers to the litre.
The Alto 800 is available in three variants – STD, LX and LXI for both the petrol and CNG guise. The car is available in six new colours – frost blue, Torque blue blazing red, superior white, silky silver and granite grey. The interiors can be had in a shade of cool grey or brown. The LXI variants will also be available with optional driver airbag.
The pricing positions the new Alto 800 above the Tata Nano, but more competitive when compared to the Hyundai Eon. Maruti confirms that they have already received more than 10,000 pre-launch bookings for car and the number will certainly be lot higher by Diwali. Maruti will continue to sell the 1.0-litre Alto K10 in current avatar for now. The Alto 800 will be manufactured at the company’s Gurgaon plant.
The launch of the Alto 800 also saw Shinzo Nakashini, MD and CEO of MSIL, commenting on the progress of the Manesar plant which underwent a lockout from July 21 to August 20 after a riot by the workers. He said the plant was now running two shifts with a total of 3500 workers and was producing 1570 cars a day.
