We reported earlier this month that Maruti Suzuki would introduce a new 1.5-litre diesel engine on the all-new Ertiga. The company has today launched the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga 1.5L diesel in the country at a starting price of Rs 9.86 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) for the mid-spec VDI variant. The ZDI and ZDI+ trims cost Rs 10.69 lakhs and Rs 11.20 lakhs (ex-showroom), respectively.
The Ertiga 1.5L diesel is priced Rs 29,311 higher than the corresponding 1.3L diesel variants. The new E15A DDiS 225 motor is developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki and generates a maximum power of 94bhp at 4000rpm and a peak torque of 225Nm between 1500-2500rpm. It is available with a six-speed manual transmission. The new 1.5-litre diesel motor on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga delivers a fuel economy of 24.20 km/l, compared to 25.47 km/l on the ubiquitous 1.3L diesel mill.
Maruti Suzuki has used a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) and optimised the compression ratio to reduce the engine fluctuations, which, the company claims, has resulted in superior NVH performance. The company recently announced its plan to stop diesel engine sales from 1 April 2020. The introduction of the new 1.5L diesel motor in the Ertiga could be a move to familiarise its buyers with the new powertrain and generate sufficient demand for the oil burner. If there is customer acceptability for diesel engines, Maruti Suzuki will upgrade the 1.5L diesel mill to BS-VI compliance.
The new-generation Maruti Suzuki Ertiga leads the MPV segment with a market share of 39 per cent. The company has sold over 40,000 units of the new Ertiga in India since its launch in November 2018. Compared to the previous model, the new-gen Ertiga scores in terms of space, comfort, practicality and design.
