India’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki has just introduced the diesel variant of its popular model Celerio. Launched at Rs 4.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base-spec version, this diesel Celerio offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 27.62kmpl, making it the most fuel-efficient car in the country.
The Celerio diesel also marks the global launch of DDiS 125, the first diesel engine designed and developed by Suzuki Motor Corporation. Maruti says it carries forward the DDiS attributes of good driveability and compactness, offered in a range of vehicles from Maruti Suzuki.
The DDiS 125 is a compact 793cc, 2-cylinder diesel engine with a turbocharger. Featuring four valves per cylinder, this new engine is all aluminium and produces 46bhp of power and 125Nm of torque. Maruti and its suppliers have reportedly invested over Rs 900 crore towards the development of DDiS 125 and it comes with over 97 per cent localisation.
Launched in February 2014, over 95,000 units of the Celerio have been sold up till now. According to Maruti, the small car has played a pivotal role in strengthening the brand’s position in the entry-level hatchback segment.
