Until now, Maruti Suzuki cars like Alto, Dzire and WagonR and Swift have been leading the sales charts. This time around, Maruti’s premium hatchback, Baleno, has claimed the second position, pushing the Dzire sedan down to the third. Compared to the 6,236 units which were sold in March 2016, the automaker has sold 16,426 units of Baleno in March 2017, thereby registering a growth of 163.40 per cent.
Reports indicate that the spike in sales can be attributed to reducing waiting period on the premium hatchback. The recent inauguration of the Gujarat facility has helped the Indian automaker overcome production constraints and expedite production of over 80,000 pending orders with a waiting period that spanned over 21-22 weeks. Moreover, the recently introduced performance focused Baleno RS version has also attracted potential buyers who have been eagerly waiting for the vehicle for a while.
Compared to last year, the WagonR which held the third position in terms of overall sales, has now dropped to sixth position. The automaker witnessed a 20.42 per cent drop with 12,105 units of the WagonR sold in March 2017 as against 14,577 units sold in the same month last year. Apart from most of Maruti Suzuki cars which have always featured in top 10 list, the Grand i10 from Hyundai has moved one step up to claim the fifth position with 12,545 units sold in March against a figure of 9,544 in the same month last year.
