One of India’s best-selling car for 14 consecutive years, the Alto has crossed a new milestone with 35 lakh cumulative unit sales. The Alto brand has witnessed a growth of 6 per cent in 2017-18 and holds a market share of 33 per cent in this fiscal year. Interestingly, reports indicate that around 44 per cent of total Alto sales are from customers under 35 years of age.
Speaking of Alto’s success in India, R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director (Marketing and Sales), Maruti Suzuki said, "Maruti Suzuki has systematically upgraded the Alto to meet the ever evolving customer aspirations and strengthen the brand Alto. In 2017-18, nearly 55 per cent of customers have selected Alto as their first car purchase in 2017-18. Interestingly, 25 per cent of Alto buyers are buying it as an additional car."
Back in 2008, the company had sold around 10 lakh units and quickly reached the 15 lakh mark in 2010. In the next two years, the company had produced around 20 lakh cars. Since then, the company has been adding 5 lakh new customers every two years. Maruti Suzuki Alto is available in two engine options - 800cc and K10. Apart from a standard five-speed manual transmission, the K10 is also available in Auto Gear Shift (AGS) transmission which accounts for 18 per cent of total sales. Apart from the petrol version, the Alto is also available in a CNG variant.
