Maruti Udyog Limited has been slapped with a fine of Rs 3.85 lakh by New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum. The sum of Rs 3.85 lakh will go to the customer as compensation for the sale of a defective car.
The complainant Veena Amlani had bought a Wagon R in 2006 and within one and a half years of its purchase she had to run from pillar to post to get it rectified for various issues. The Wagon R owned by the Amlani was taken to workshop for repairs on as many as 10 times but the car’s manufacturing defect could not be rectified despite attempts by the company.
The bench presided by C K Chaturvedi based his arguments on the purchase documents and repair bills which made it clear that the car wasn’t repaired to complete satisfaction despite numerous attempts by the customer.
Since the car was purchased seven years ago replacement was not possible. Based on all the above factors, the Bench stated the customer has faced harassment and agitation and deserves a befitting compensation. Maruti will have to pay Rs 3.85 lakh out of which Rs 3.5 lakh is the compensation and Rs 35,000 as litigation fee spent by the customer. The company was contacted for comments and they said the complaint was false.
