Maruti has launched the Celerio CNG at Rs 4.68 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi). The car is available only in VXi trim and is called the Celerio Green. The car, as speculated, comes with the same 1.0-litre K-Series engine mated to Maruti’s patented iGPI system that is used in its other vehicles as well.
The launch of the CNG variant has happened in a record three months from the launch of the car at the 2014 Auto Expo. We expected the Celerio to set new standards for fuel efficiency with a CNG kit and without any surprise the company claims the car can do 31.7 km/kg of CNG. The engine makes similar power to that of the Wagon R CNG at 58 bhp and 77Nm of torque, but betters its taller sibling in the efficiency part by 5 kms as we predicted yesterday.
Buyers expecting the Celerio AMT to get the CNG kit might be disappointed as the car will be available only with a manual gearbox and in a single trim the VXi. Maruti has intelligently priced the Celerio and at this price point it has no competition from other brands. For a price range of Rs 4 lakh to 6 lakh, the only options available today in the market are the Maruti Wagon R CNG, Hyundai Santro CNG and the Hindustan Ambassador. In this company the Celerio is the most modern vehicle and commands as premium of Rs 30,000 over its sibling the Wagon R and the Santro.
