Scanned pictures of the spec-sheet of Maruti’s upcoming compact crossover, the Ignis, have surfaced on the internet. The Ignis was first displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show last year and will add to Maruti’s crossover portfolio along with the S-Cross and the soon to be launched Vitara Brezza.
The Maruti Ignis will be unveiled on February 4 at the media conference reserved for Nexa which means the compact crossover will most probably be a Nexa only product along with the Baleno and the S-Cross. Maruti will have its expectations up after the Baleno outsold the Elite i20 in December while being on sale only through the limited number of Nexa dealerships.
The Ignis, at 3700mm length, 1660mm width and 1595mm height, is small by all means. But a ground clearance of 180mm certainly makes the car look butch. A 258-litre boot is still better than the Maruti Swift, which means you will be able to carry luggage for the five occupants. The tall-boy twin-cab design should provide enough legroom and headroom for the occupants like the WagonR.
Under the hood, we expect it to get the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine – the one to be introduced with the Baleno on February 3. For diesel, the DDiS 200 with the 74bhp setup should be enough for the sub-four-metre car. Owing to the popularity of AMTs, the Ignis might also give you an option to dump the clutch pedal along with the standard five-speed manual gearbox.
The Ignis is expected to be launched later in the year around the festive season (read August – September). The Ignis will target the KUV100 and is expected to be priced alongside the Swift, around Rs 4.5 to Rs 6 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi, or may be a tad bit higher.
