Maruti Swift Dzire is the best-selling car in India according to May, 2014 sales report. The crown has been held steady by Maruti’s Alto for a while and in a twist of tales the Dzire has clinched the title from the small car.
This may come as a surprise, but the Dzire has been posting consistent numbers of above 15,000 units for quite some time. The top three spots have been dominated by three Maruti products the Alto, Swift and the Dzire for a while now. While the Dzire takes the top spot, it is followed by the Swift and the Alto fell to the third position.
While one would believe that cheaper cars sell more in India, the Dzire shows that need not be the case always. Introduction of cars like the Honda Amaze and the recently launched Hyundai Xcent have done not much damage to the Dzire either. Honda sold 4,750 units of the Amaze in the same month, while the Hyundai Xcent posted impressive numbers of 7,792 units. The Dzire sold 18,953 units, that is 6,051 units more than both these cars put together.
A sedan has always been a status symbol in India, a way of letting the world know that you are successful, but they were a little inconvenient to park and drive in crowded metro cities. But, the compact sedans are just about longer than some big hathcbacks and fit the bill of efficiency and are not too hard to park or drive either. If cars like the Dzire, Amaze and Xcent post consistent numbers then it would be a little optimistic to predict that compact sedans will be the next big thing in India. But, it isn’t down to one car, as a small car buyer in India has plethora of options to choose from, whereas the compact sedan segment is yet to see more than five options. However, it might soon be a reality with Tata and Ford preparing to enter this lucrative segment and these numbers will surely wake up the others who still don’t have a compact sedan in their arsenal.
