The Europe-spec Maruti Baleno which comes with six airbags has earned a three star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. It is a decent achievement given the fact that the car has a kerb weight of under 900 kilograms. The Maruti Baleno which is sold in India gets dual front airbags and ABS as standard.
The Euro-spec Baleno has scored 80 per cent in adult occupant safety, as tests indicated good protection to the knees and femur for the driver and the passenger in the event of a frontal collision. The Baleno variant which was equipped with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system scored a four-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test. The test noted that the safety pack loaded car scored 73 per cent in child occupant safety, 65 per cent in pedestrian safety and 25 per cent in safety assist, thereby scoring 85 per cent in adult occupant safety.
The two cars used in the Euro NCAP test came with safety features like an ISOFIX child seat mount, dual front airbags, front and rear seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, seatbelt reminder, side chest airbags in the front and side head airbags for the front as well as rear occupants.
In India, the Maruti Baleno is offered in petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol version gets a 1.2-litre engine which puts out 83bhp of power, while the diesel variant gets a 1.3-litre engine which puts out 75bhp of power. Both the engine options come mated to a five-speed manual transmission. For those interested in automatic, a CVT transmission is optional only in the petrol guise.
