Mahindra will showcase the XUV 500 with hybrid technology at the Auto Expo. The vehicle is an indication of the company’s development capabilities and a step towards its vehicles being environmental friendly.
Mahindra’s subsidiary the Reva might have played a big role in the development of the hybrid XUV 500. Mahindra is also jointly working with Ssangyong to develop a family of engines for its range of vehicles. Ideally the XUV’s current diesel engine could work in sync with an electric motor, but this set-up might not yield great economy figures. So the association with Ssangyong might come into play here. This will be the first SUV in India with a diesel hybrid powertrain which might earn the accolades for Mahindra.
Mahindra’s penchant for electric technology doesn’t stop with the acquisition of Reva, they will be participating in Formula-E (Electric Formula racing) this year as well. The SUV major will also showcase an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). The addition of this could increase the appeal of Mahindra SUVs to urban buyers who want an SUV but shy away as they are not as easy to drive as a relatively smaller sedan at its price.
