“Mahindra XUV Automatic maybe launched next year” was the title of our last report on Mahindra bringing the SUV to India. We bring you more details today. The XUV automatic is likely to get a more powerful engine and the power output is rumoured to be around 170 bhp.
The XUV 500 in manual guise makes 140bhp, however the gearbox is not designed to make any additional power or torque. Mahindra is also working to improve the overall driving experience of the XUV 500 and the addition of extra power is for the same purpose. The SUV will use a six-speed automatic gearbox sourced from Aisin Seiki of USA. Mahindra might use this transmission only on the XUV 500 and the chances of any other Mahindra badged vehicle getting it are remote. However, the transmission will first be used in Ssangyong’s upcoming compact SUV.
It is still early stages to predict the pricing but we expect the XUV auto to be priced at least Rs one lakh above its manual sibling. It has to be seen whether the XUV will get the transmission across the variants or keep it exclusively for the top-end models.
In all probability, Mahindra might consider exporting their flagship SUV with the auto box to the international markets.
