Mahindra confirmed at the launch of the new XUV 500 automatic yesterday that the new Aisin AW six-speed automatic gearbox will be carried over to other Mahindra and SsangYong SUVs. The probability of the Scorpio getting this gearbox soon is high and we can expect the SUV to get this update as well.
The Scorpio automatic, on sale now, comes equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission sourced from an Australian company Drivetrain Systems International (DSI). This DSI gearbox is the same old unit used on the previous generation Scorpio and might be replaced with the new one sourced from the Japanese manufacturer Aisin AW. The upgrade in the automatic gearbox would mean smoother gear shifts all thanks to the use of a new torque converter.
However, knowing that the price difference between a manual XUV 500 and an automatic one is about a lakh rupees, the new Scorpio AT might also demand a premium over the cost of the present one. Also, this upgrade might still take some time as the manufacturer would want to clear the stocks of the current Scorpio automatic variants.
