Mahindra’s upcoming refreshed SUV, the Scorpio, has been spied testing repeatedly. This time another test mule has been spotted on the outskirts of Chennai where Mahindra’s research and development is located.
The 2014 Scorpio, in a disguised avatar, doesn’t reveal much of the specifications; however, we have gauged some details from the images. The vehicle will boast of changes to the exterior as well as interior. The company might not just limit the car to cosmetic changes but also do some revisions to the mechanical bits.
The facelifted Scorpio will get a new grille and headlamps. The design of the bumpers might be changed. With larger OVRMs, the car has wheel arches a bit different than the outgoing vehicle. The alloy wheels also get a new design, which look better than the ones on the present Scorpio top-end variant.. At the back of the car, tail lamps might be changed to LED ones continuing with the Christmas tree arrangement.
The interiors have been slightly updated in terms of both layout and design. Mahindra seems to have worked majorly on improving the quality of upholstery in the upcoming car. The steering wheel is carried over from the XUV 500. The car sports a new dashboard and a stylish instrument cluster with silver accents.
The revamped Scorpio might be powered by the same engine that the outgoing version has, i.e. the 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engine that produces 120bhp of power. The vehicle will be a front-wheel drive with these engines mated to new five- and six-speed gearboxes. Media speculations also suggest that the 140bhp mill from the XUV 500 mated to a six-speed-manual transmission might be housed under the hood of the 2014 variant. Nevertheless, Mahindra might refine the engine making it less noisy like the Ssangyong Rexton.
With frequent sightings of the test mules taking rounds in various parts in the country and continuous tests that Mahindra has been doing of the facelifted Scorpio, we think that the launch of the car might be imminent. Apart from this 2014 Scorpio, the company plans to enter into the rapidly expanding compact SUV segment. They have been testing a sub-four metre crossover named S101 that will go up against the EcoSport. We can expect Mahindra to introduce this vehicle as well to the Indian car market this year.
