Mahindra and Mahindra is still testing their new compact SUV S101 in India. Another test mule was spied near the company’s R&D center in Chennai.
The test vehicle in the disguised avatar hides most details. Nevertheless, earlier reports suggest that the S101 will be based on a brand new monocoque platform jointly developed by Mahindra and Ssangyong. It is expected to share a few components with the Quanto.
From these spyshots, the fascia is not visible, however, from the pictures seen earlier we know that the car will get rectangular-shaped headlamp inserts containing the circular headlights rather than the conventional round lights seen earlier.
The S101 will be powered by a brand new pair of petrol and diesel engines – 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel units. Power will be sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.
At present, the compact SUV segment in India is rapidly expanding with different manufacturers developing new products. Mahindra’s much-awaited S101 will compete with the Ford EcoSport which dominates the segment at present. This compact vehicle will be introduced as a sub-four metre SUV, slotting it in between the Quanto compact MPV and the Scorpio SUV. It might be introduced sometime early next year.
