Utility vehicle giant Mahindra is continuously testing its upcoming compact SUV, prototypes of which have been caught on test multiple times in the past few months. Codenamed S101, the vehicle has been spied yet again near Mahindra’s R&D centre in Chennai.
The S101 will be a new sub-4 metre offering which is being jointly developed by Mahindra and sister brand SsangYong. Based on a new monocoque platform, the S101, perhaps, is the most intriguing product from Mahindra after the Scorpio. As before, the vehicle is covered in heavy camouflage, however, we have learned from previous spy pictures that it indeed takes heavy inspiration from Mahindra’s bigger XUV 500.
Powering the S101 will be a brand new pair of petrol and diesel engines – 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel units with a five-speed manual gearbox.
The S101 will be introduced as a sub-four metre compact SUV, slotting in between the Quanto compact MPV and the Scorpio SUV when it goes on sale sometime next year. By adding this new model to its line-up, Mahindra will also be looking to cash in on the rapidly expanding compact SUV segment in India.
