In a rather surprise move, Mahindra has just launched an all-new off-roader for the US market. It’s called the Roxor and although it may look similar to the Thar, it will be manufactured in Detroit, Michigan. Here’s what it’s all about.
First of all, the Roxor is not road legal. It’s design is based on the Thar which itself is based on the original Willys Jeep - an American icon and instantly recognisable when it comes to SUV design.
In terms of the package, the Roxor has a two-seat layout with a barebones cabin and no windscreen.
The off-roader is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 62bhp/195Nm. You get a five-speed manual, low range gearbox and a locking differential as a part of the off-road package.
The top speed is just 72kmph but bear in mind, the Roxor isn’t road legal so its average cruising speed of around 50-60kmph in more than adequate over off-road excursions.
Mahindra is taking a top-down approach where it will appeal to enthusiasts and create a name for itself before making road legal vehicles.
Mahindra says it has scheduled a National Dealer Meeting on March 18-20th, in San Antonio, Texas, where it will discuss the roll-out and future product offerings.
