The Mahindra group has presented the Quanto Automatic at the Auto Expo and called it the Quanto Auto Shift. The MUV gets an Automated Manual Transmission and is the first diesel vehicle in India to be shown with an AMT.
The vehicle will get the same mechanicals as the regular vehicle, but it will be a clutchless transmission. The AMT transmission or a semi-automatic doesn’t come with a weight penalty unlike the conventional automatic gearbox. The added weight penalty could have added more bulk to the already heavy Quanto which tips the scales at 1.6 tonnes.
The transmission has an ‘E’ button, and the lever in the default position sits in the right slot and has two markings there ‘N’ and ‘R’. Once slotted to the left it goes into ‘M’ with “+” and “-“ toggle functions. The new technology has its advantages such as not taxing the fuel consumption, is not expensive to build and is not heavy either.
Mahindra was the first company to sell an Automatic SUV in India, now they have brought in the AMT to an MPV. Though the Quanto hasn’t set the sales charts ablaze it is a decent MPV and might appeal to urban buyers who want an easy-to-drive vehicle with a diesel engine and seven seats.
