A 4x4 version of the Mahindra Qunato has been spotted testing outside of Pune by the team at Motorbash. The Quanto was launched in September last year and is the second sub- four metre compact SUV after the Premiere Rio in the Indian market.
The test mule that was snapped up did not display any signs of being a 4WD on the body, rather the 4x4 markings have been subtly hidden on the wheel hubs. The report also suggests that the Quanto 4x4 does not have the jump seats in the back and this in turn has led to the absence of a step under the rear door.
Mahindra, during the launch of the Quanto, had suggested that a four-wheel drive version of the compact SUV with a four-cylinder engine would be sold in international markets. It is likely that this is the vehicle, however, since the test car is a RHD version it seems likely that it may come to India also. The engine will be in a lower state of tune to favour fuel efficiency over performance.
Such a vehicle would be popular in rural areas where the roads are questionable or non-existent and the average vehicle carries a minimum of twice its seating capacity.
