Mahindra & Mahindra are planning to setup a small car plant in Andhra Pradesh. As per company, the project design is ready and they have already started applying for various government approvals. Currently, Mahindra operates a manufacturing facility at Zaheerabad in Andhra Pradesh where it manufactures Bolero Maxi range pick-up vehicles.
We had earlier said the Indian SUV major was developing a small car and a compact crossover which were likely to share a common platform and powertrains. Codenamed the C-101 (the car) and the S-101 (the crossover) it likely that both vehicles will be built in a monocoque design and use a front-wheel drive architecture. This is a standard practice in the industry for building small cars nowadays.
It is expected that Mahindra will keep the size of the cars below the four-metre mark to take advantage of the excise benefit. This means that it will be able to compete with the likes of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai who are the segment leaders. Currently, the Verito is the only passenger car which Mahindra sells in Indian market.
We expect the announcement of the new facility during inauguration of Mahindra’s tractor plant at the same location next month. Once inaugurated, this tractor plant will be world’s largest tractor manufacturing plant with a capacity to manufacture 300 units per day.
