We reported last month that Mahindra might be launching the new Scorpio (W 105) soon in our market. There are rumours going around that India’s largest SUV maker might launch the new Scorpio on September 25, 2014.
Months and months of rigorous testing later, Mahindra finally seems to be ready with the new Scorpio. Production began on August 1, and the company wanted to build an inventory of 5,000 units before its debut as they faced a supply chain crisis when they launched the XUV 500 with the waiting period extending to 15 months at certain locations. Also, the Scorpio is a popular SUV in India with a fan base in the urban and rural markets. Its current sales average is around 4,000 units a month, expected to go up after the new model is launched.
The new Scorpio is expected to use a new ladder frame chassis which uses hydroforming to give it more stiffness and is lightweight. The source also claims that the dynamics of the Scorpio is much better despite the ladder-frame construction.
It seems like Mahindra has a winner in hand with the new Scorpio. Expect it to be priced at least Rs 50,000 more than the outgoing model and it will compete with the likes of Renault Duster when it goes on sale.
