Mahindra has introduced a new version of the mHawk diesel engine with a displacement of under 2000cc, which can be sold in Delhi and rest of the NCR region. The Scorpio and XUV500 with the new engine will be available in Delhi and NCR at the moment.
Last week, we wrote about the possibility of Mahindra launching a downsized version of the mHawk engine, showing the permutations that will allow them to reduce displacement without having a big effect on the performance. While the company is yet to provide specific details, the engine displacement is 1.99-litre, the power rating is 120bhp for the Scorpio and 140bhp for the XUV500.
Speaking on this occasion, Pravin Shah, President and Chief Executive (Automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra said, “This new engine, the development of which started in August 2014, is now ready for launch on both the New Generation Scorpio and the New Age XUV500. We do hope that our customers would enjoy driving these vehicles which deliver the performance of our currently on offer 2.2-litre mHawk engines.”
With the new engine, the Scorpio and XUV500 will be the only two larger SUVs, which will be available in Delhi and NCR, till the end of March. The interim ruling from Supreme Court has banned registration of the new diesel SUVs and premium vehicles with displacement of over 2000cc, till March 31. Although the ban might be revoked in a couple of months, the new engine gives Mahindra an advantage, at least, for the next couple of months.
