Mahindra has announced, via its official website, the revised prices for its flagship XUV500 SUV. This comes a few days after it announced that it had reduced the ground clearance in a bid to counter the effects of the new excise duty rates announced in the 2013 Union Budget. The price revision, in the region of Rs 27, 000 to Rs 30, 000 has taken place across all three variants.
The 2013 Union Budget had announced that vehicles with a ground clearance of over 170mm or an engine above 1500cc will be taxed at 30 per cent rather the previous 27 per cent. Most of the vehicles in Mahindra’s range fall under this category, putting them in a situation where they are unable to competitively price their vehicles. The ground clearance has been revised from 200mm to 160mm and to make up for the lost ground clearance Mahindra has installed a skid plate to protect the underbody.
Our dealer sources have also revealed that the model without the revised ground clearance will also be on sale till stocks run out. This means there are likely to be extremely competitive deals and special offers on the older models.
It is likely that the Indian SUV major will implement the move on its other vehicles in a bid to competitively price them. We had earlier reported that Mahindra was planning to launch a cut-price variant of the XUV500 (mostly likely to be called the W4 variant) and with the revised ground clearance; it is likely to get even cheaper now.
