Mahindra’s new flagship SUV, the Alturas G4, is all-set to launch on 24 November. The Alturas is basically the Ssangyong Rexton G4 which is sold globally in markets like Europe, Asia and Australia. Mahindra has slated the G4 Rexton as a full-size SUV, a segment that attracts some stiff competition.
In the Rs 30 lakhs-plus segment, we have the Toyota Fortuner which outsells all the other full-size SUVs combined. The Ford Endeavour, one of the best full-size SUVs in the Indian car market will also compete with the Alturas G4 in the body-on-frame category of rugged heavy duty SUVs. The erstwhile Isuzu MU-X and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport are two more Japanese SUVs that the Rexton will have to compete with.
While these are body-on-frame SUVs, the Indian car market also has crossover SUVs like the Skoda Kodiaq and the Honda CR-V along with the five-seater Tiguan, offer more road-friendly SUVs in a price bracket similar to the Mahindra Alturas G4. While the Kodiaq has the 2.0-litre 148bhp diesel, the CR-V has a 120bhp 1.6-litre diesel. The Mahindra Alturas will be powered by the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel that will develop 185bhp/420Nm of power and will be offered with both manual and automatic gearbox options. In terms of features, the Alturas G4 will have a long list and might include features like an electric sunroof, ambient lighting and power seats and will match the competition.
