December last year, we had told you that Lotus might be rekindling the fire under its SUV dreams and seems like we were right. Because Lotus has now officially declared their intentions to build one by 2022. But not before they build two more sportscars which will certainly not be special editions of the Evora.
After the Chinese giant Geely acquired the controlling stake in Lotus in November last year, the Lotus management seemed excited about the future as strong finances would certainly help them get on with the projects that have been stuck in the pipeline for years together due to the lack of funds.
The world has seen Geely turn around Volvo from a dormant carmaker to the hep manufacturer it has become now along with the rise of the Polestar. With Geely investing millions in people as well as the production lines for Lotus, the 2020 target for two sportscars looks quite achievable.
That is also because, despite the crunch, Lotus has been working on an all-new Elise for 2020, which will very well be one of the two proposed cars. The second car will be an all-new model and will sit above the Elise in terms of performance as well as price but sticking to the strict weight norms of the British marque.
But when we talk about SUV, the weight issues will certainly have to be addressed deftly to make sure it is an SUV and a Lotus at the same time. And we are quite sure that Geely would want Volvo to help out its now little brother with some expertise in its years of SUV making and building reliable cars.
