Land Rover has made yet another version of the latest-generation Range Rover. This time it’s a long wheelbase model which also happens to be powered by a hybrid power-train. The brand has unveiled this new model at the ongoing Beijing Auto Show.
The long wheelbase Range Rover hybrid is the first diesel hybrid model to be offered in China. Given that China is recognised by Land Rover as a potentially strong market for its new premium hybrid model, the company has decided to add this new model to its portfolio. Also, Land Rover knows that the long wheelbase design is best suited to Chinese customers’ liking for a luxurious back seat experience.
The hybrid powertrain combines a 3-litre SDV6 diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor, mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. This system allows the driver to select from three different drive modes to maximise performance or efficiency. Land Rover says this environmentally-friendly model is capable of delivering 26 per cent lower CO2 emissions than the standard model.
The total output of the diesel engine and the electric motor is rated at 340bhp and a class-leading 700Nm torque, delivering performance on par with the SDV8 engine. Land Rover has revealed that the China-specific model is technically identical to the ones sold elsewhere; except for a change in the exhaust system to meet different local emission standards.
As for going off-road, don’t let the longer wheelbase and hybrid tech fool you into thinking that this longer version of the SUV is no good when it comes to dealing with the rough stuff. Land Rover has assured that the hybrid system uses the brand’s proven Terrain Response system and an advanced all-wheel-drive system. Additionally, wading depth capability is still rated a class-leading 900mm.
Land Rover has announced that the long wheelbase version of the Range Rover hybrid will go on sale in May, with deliveries expected to start from the end of this year.
