The Automobile Club de l'Quest, which sets the rules for the 24 Hours and the series that take its name around the world, announced new engine rules for the diesels for 2009 at the Silverstone Le Mans Series event.
The diameter of the engine air-restrictors for diesels will be cut by 10 percent and turbo pressure has been reduced as well. According to the ACO, this will restore ‘sporting equity’ between the petrol and diesel prototype racers in endurance racing, at the same time as increasing lap times at Le Mans. It does not want LMP1 prototypes to lap under 3:30 during next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, whereas this year the Peugeot 908 HDI FAPs regularly lapped in the low 3:20s during the race. We find Audi at the sharp end of things yet again, after winning the race so many times.
What makes this bit of news really interesting is the fact that Peugeot has already prepared a hybrid 908 called the 908 HY which it hopes will be allowed to race next year. The 908 HY will be run at the Silverstone race this Sunday, so keep your televisions tuned to see if the first hybrid since the Supra hybrid - and the first diesel hybrid ever - can win a race!
