The latest-generation Mercedes Benz C-Class made its global debut in December last year, and Mercedes seems to be going all out to make it as environmentally friendly as it can be. The car has been spied in plug-in hybrid form already.
Going by the report, the new C-Class plug-in hybrid will use the same technology featured in the recently unveiled S-Class plug-in hybrid. The car, in all probability, will go on sale sometime next year as a 2016 model. The upcoming C-Class plug-in hybrid is expected to use a turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine under the hood. While the four-cylinder unit alone makes over 210bhp of power, the electric motor is expected to produce about 70 additional horses, thereby bringing the total output to 280bhp. The car is expected have an electric-only range of around 50 kilometers.
Besides Mercedes, Audi and BMW are also looking to introduce plug-in hybrid versions of their entry-level premium sedans. All three models are expected to hit global markets within the next two years. As for the Indian market, none of the brands are considering bringing hybrid versions here anytime soon simply because the infrastructure doesn’t exist, and this doesn’t seem likely to change in the near future.
