Lamborghini will unveil a concept car that will eventually become the successor the to its top-selling Gallardo supercar at 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. This new car (codenamed LP724) will be longer, wider and is expected to share many of its components and design features with the next generation Audi R8. The concept vehicle, dubbed the Carbrera by the motoring press, will spawn a production car that is expected to go on sale from the middle of next year.
The increase in length and width is expected to result a larger wheelbase and in turn in more interior space. However, this model is expected to see Lamborghini move away from the carbon fibre monocoque that it used for the Aventador hypercar and now shift to parent company Audi’s modular spaceframe technology. This is believed to be in a bid to allow both vehicles to share components and thus allow their development to run in parallel.
The body of the car is expected to use a combination of carbon fibre reinforced plastic and aluminium and this is expected to bring the weight of car under the 1500kg mark, the weight of the current Gallardo.
Power for this new car will come courtesy of a reworked naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 petrol mill. It is expected to produce 600PS and 542Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to all four-wheels via a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch automatic. There is also probability of at least one limited edition rear-wheel drive model.
The Lamborghini Gallardo is the Italian automaker’s most successful model to date and has sold over 10, 000 units since it was launched in 2004. We hope that the new car is just as exciting and off its rocker to drive as the baby Lambo.
Meanwhile, Lamborghini India has announced that it will unveil a special India edition (Raging Bull Special India Edition) of the Gallardo LP 550-2 at a function in Mumbai on June 19. The car is a part of 50th anniversary celebrations and joins other models like the Gallardo Singapore edition and the Gallardo Indonesia edition.
