Lamborghini has announced the "Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo", a single-make racing series that will kick off in May 2009 featuring a lightweight version of the Gallardo LP560-4. For the record, Blancpain is the Swiss watchmaker that will sponsor the race series. The Italian firm intends to build a total of thirty cars that will be available for both individual drivers as well as Lamborghini dealer teams. However, one factory car will be reserved for celebrity 'guest drivers'.
The Super Trofeo race car that will compete in the series is based on the Gallardo LP560-4 powered by a juiced-up version of the 5.2-litre V10 engine generating an extra 10bhp for a total of 570bhp which is channeled to all four wheels by Lambo's e.gear six-speed sequential gearbox. The first competition of the 2009 provisional calendar will run on 3 May, 2009 at the Silverstone circuit in the UK.
