New segment
Kia has unveiled the Syros SUV. It’s a new segment of vehicles that they are jumping into as this is a car that fitting in between the Sonet and the Seltos in the Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 16 lakh bracket putting it above the Sonet. It brings a new design language and upgraded feature list to the game. How does it stack up to the Sonet, let’s find out.
Measurments (all in mm) | Kia Sonet | Kia Syros |
Length | 3995 | 3995 |
Width | 1790 | 1805 |
Height | 1642 | 1680 |
Wheelbase | 2500 | 2550 |
Bootspace | 385-litres | 465-litres |
Dimensions
When looking at the chart you can see that the Syros despite having the same overall length is wider and taller than the Sonet. It also has a longer wheelbase and a bigger boot than the Sonet.
Features over the Sonet
When looking at the top-spec models, in this case, X-line Vs HTX Plus (O) diesel AT, you can see that both cars get dual-digital screens, climate control with rear AC vents, connected car technology, button start, ambient lighting, 360-degree camera, ADAS, TPMS and full LED light package. However, over the Sonet, the Syros gets level-2 ADAS, reclining second-row seat back with ventilation, eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, bigger displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, dual-pane sunroof, side parking sensors and wireless phone mirroring.
The expanded feature list was expected as the Syros will be priced higher than the Sonet and thus has to offer more. Its main party trick is of course its bigger boot, reclining second-row as well as ventilation for the second-row seats.
Powertrain options
The Syros will be offered with Kia 1.0-litre GDi turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel. The turbo petrol produces 118bhp/172Nm and can be had with either a six-speed MT or a seven-speed DCT. The diesel on the other hand produces 114bhp/250Nm and can be had with either a six-speed MT or a six-speed torque converter AT. The 1.2-litre engine has been limited to the Sonet in a bid to make a price separation between both cars. I.e the Sonet is expected to get more entry-level variants while the Syros will take a up a few slots occupied by the top-spec Sonet models. Kia also has in its pipeline more affordable GT-line variants which we expect will debut with the Sonet before going to the other models.
Expected pricing and competition
We expect Kia to price the Syros in the range of Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 16 lakh putting it above the Sonet. It will compete with top versions of the Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza and the Mahindra XUV3XO. It’s also expected to go up against the entry-level versions of cars like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Kia Carens, MG Astor, Honda Elevate and the Tata Curvv.
