Day 1 of the 21st season of the JK Tyre FMSCI national championship took place at the Kari Speedway in Coimbatore. The event saw the running of the premier class Euro JK 18 series as well as the Formula LGB 4 series. Nayan Chaterjee took pole position during the first qualifying session but an error during the race saw him retire. Honours for the top step then went to Karthik Tharani who had qualified second and he won the 15-lap race in 15:29.526 minutes.
Nirmal Uma Shankar (Chennai) and Manav Sharma (Faridabad) took the other two places on the podium. The second Euro JK18, which was to be held as the final event for the day, was called off due to a technical issue and will now be conducted tomorrow morning (July 8).
In the LGB 4 category, seasoned racer Vishnu Prasad (MSport) staved off a stiff challenge from Sandeep Kumar (Dark Don) and Raghul Rangasamy (also of MSport) to win the highly competitive opening race in the LGB Formula 4.
This year, Formula LGB 4 also saw, for the first time, the participation of an all-girls team. Ahura Racing with their striking red cars and uniforms took to the grid and showed everyone they clearly meant business.
The six girls created history on Friday, becoming the first all women’s team to compete in India. Five of them eventually competed in the LGB 4 category, and did well to finish the race. Racing for the first time ever, Coimbatore’s Megaa KS beat the rest of the girls, impressing with an overall timing of 18:09.051 minutes. Pune’s Dr Ritika Oberoi, a seasoned motorsports competitor, chased her all the way, taking one extra second.
Both the Euro JK18 and Formula LGB4 will return for a second round of races tomorrow and we will be live at the Kari speedway to give you all the action so stay tuned!
