The Maruti Suzuki Swift is currently one of the highest selling hatchbacks on sale in India today and it has achieved this success for a variety of reasons, one of which obviously is the fact that it is a Maruti product. Now wanting to up the game even further, Maruti Suzuki may launch an Indian version of the Swift Sport during the festival season. It has been spotted at the Indo-Japanese automaker’s yard at Manesar and will most likely be limited to a large number of cosmetic changes.
What is new on the car? The pictures reveal that this car, a.k.a the Swift Sport, gets a larger bumper, new design for the alloy wheels (consequently the wheel covers too) and chrome moulding for the fog lamps, though we suspect that the car in the picture is not the top spec variant. The highest offering will have LED running lamps like the European and Japanese spec car. However, the picture reveals something far more important, which is, that it will be offered with rear disc brakes.
The Swift Sport in the five-door guise was shown to us during the 2014 Auto Expo but MSIL made no comment on whether this car would ever be launched in India. Globally it is offered with two doors and five doors. Power comes from a 1.6-litre four-pot motor that produces 136bhp and 160Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The suspension setup includes Mcpherson struts in the front and a torsion beam in the rear making it a potent hot hatchback.
While it is exciting to imagine that the Swift Sport is finally coming to the Indian market (given that we are its largest market and the fact that the car will eventually achieve a cult status) it is also possible that the car in the picture could also be a facelifted version of the Swift which will launch during the holiday season.
