India car sales May 2017: Winners and Losers

The overall car sales in India have dipped in the month of May 2017 as compared to the previous month. All the top 10 manufacturers have shown negative growth month-on-month barring Mahindra. The drop in sales numbers is in line with the seasonal trends. We churn out the numbers to find out which cars bucked the trend and climbed the winner boards and the ones that contributed to this negative growth.

Winners

Ford Figo

Ford has launched the Figo Sports recently and the move seems to have boosted the sales of the hatchback in India. While the sales of all other Ford cars have shrunk in May, the Figo is the only one showing positive growth. 

Hyundai Grand i10

The updated Hyundai Grand i10 has continued with its strong performance, falling just shy of 13,000 units in the month of May. With the new diesel engine and outgoing looks, this Hyundai hatchback’s performance is next only to the Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Mahindra XUV500

Mahindra’s flagship SUV, the XUV500,  has been selling consistently well and has again managed to climb to the winners list. Also, the month of May saw the Scorpio as well as the TUV300 surpassing the sales numbers of the previous months, thus contributing to the month on month growth for the Indian SUV maker.

Losers

Honda Amaze

Launches of the new Hyundai Xcent and the Maruti Suzuki Dzire have taken the compact sedan game to the next level rendering the Amaze rather toothless in the fray. From a consistent 3,500 units on an average, the  Honda Amaze numbers have dropped to less than 1,500 units in the month of May.

Tata Hexa

A lot was expected from the new Tata Hexa, especially in the premium people mover category that has been dominated by the Toyota Innova. We felt Tata had missed the bus with its pricing and the dwindling numbers might prove us right. The Hexa managed to sell just 727 units, the lowest number since its launch earlier this year.

Chevrolet

Chevrolet has decided to shut shop in India and despite the massive discounts, the buyers are choosing to look away from the American brand. GM has assured availability of after sales service for existing buyers even after they wrap up by December, but, it hasn’t been able to make any difference.
