India car sales August 2017: Winners and Losers

A spate of recent launches has changed the automotive scenario in the country. Cars which once featured on the bestseller list have now been witnessing a drop in sales. In terms of total sales, Maruti Suzuki continues to be the market leader with 51.7 per cent market share followed by Hyundai and Mahindra on second and third positions, with a market share of 16.1 per cent and six per cent respectively. Published below is a list of winners and losers on the sales chart for the month of August 2017.

    Winners

    Maruti Suzuki Dzire

The Dzire compact sedan has always been a considerable contributor to Maruti Suzuki’s overall sales. This time around, the recently launched new Dzire takes it to a whole new level with 30,934 units sold in August 2017 as against 14,703 units sold in July 2017, thereby reporting a massive growth of 110 per cent. The new Dzire is available in a total of eight variants and six of them are available in AMT options.

    Jeep Compass

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles-owned Jeep Compass has emerged as a strong player in the SUV segment in India. Jeep has sold 2020 units of the Compass in August as compared to 935 units sold in July, thereby witnessing a growth of 116 per cent. Moreover, the company has received over 10,000 bookings for the vehicle and is also one of the most affordable models from Jeep in India.

    Skoda Superb

After implementation of GST from 1 July 2017, car manufacturers in India had revised prices across their product line-up. Passing the benefits to customers, Skoda had announced price benefits of up to Rs 2.4 lakhs on the Superb sedan. The premium offering from Skoda has witnessed 116 per cent growth with 367 units sold in August as against the 170 units sold in July.

    Losers

    Maruti Suzuki S-Cross

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross has been struggling to achieve decent sales numbers for quite a while now. And things only seem to get worse, with reports indicating a 98 per cent drop in sales with just 48 units sold in August as against 2,895 units sold in July. The company is currently selling the existing stock as it makes way for the new S-Cross which is due for launch soon.

    Honda Amaze

The Amaze compact sedan has been a decent contributor to Honda’s overall sales in India as it averaged over 2000 unit sales in the country. The sales numbers have seen a drop of 34 per cent with 1,928 units sold in August as against the 2,913 units sold in July this year. The drop in sales for the Amaze is a direct result of impressive sales number witnessed by the new Maruti Suzuki Dzire.

    Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has reported a steady growth in sales over the last few month. However, back in August, the company reported a six per cent drop in sales for the first time with sales of only 14,396 units compared to 15,243 units of the Brezza sold in July.
