Car sales in India continue to be bleak in June with a significant drop in sales across most car segments. On the contrary, the compact SUV segment has witnessed a Year-on-Year (YoY) growth of 38 per cent in June 2019 as against the same period last year, primarily due to two new products namely the Mahindra XUV300 and the Hyundai Venue. Similarly, the MUV segment too has witnessed a YoY sales growth of three per cent in June 2019 as against June 2018. This can be attributed to recent launches like that of the Mahindra Marazzo and the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
In terms of losses, the compact sedan segment has taken the maximum hit with a 42 per cent drop in sales in June 2019. The Ford Aspire has been the least popular choice in this segment with a 61 per cent drop in sales in June 2019 as compared to the same period in 2018. The Volkswagen Ameo, Hyundai Xcent and Honda Amaze sales have dropped by 51 per cent, 48 per cent and 42 per cent, respectively. The Tata Tigor and Zest sales have dropped by 46 per cent and the Maruti Suzuki Dzire sales have dropped by 39 per cent in June 2019.
Among the top 25 best-selling cars in June 2019, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has witnessed the highest growth of 76 per cent in June, primarily due to the launch of a new-gen model. The Eeco from Maruti Suzuki has also posted a growth of 65 per cent as the company recently discontinued the popular selling Omni in the van segment. The Maruti Suzuki Alto continues to lead in the entry-level small car segment with four per cent growth, while the Tata Nexon has posted a one per cent growth last month.
As we enter the second half of 2019, car sales in the country are likely to improve with new product launches and BS-VI updates.
