The second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, which will be launched in India in early 2016, has been officially revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was previewed earlier this year at the Detroit Motor Show through the Cross Coupe GTE concept car and bears all the hallmarks of Volkswagen’s latest design language.
Now underpinned by the German automaker’s MQB platform, it is now larger, longer and despite the increased proportions almost 50kg lighter than the outgoing model. As compared to the latter it has also got a longer wheelbase thanks to the increased length.
From the front, we can see the two-slat chrome grille, swept back double barrel headlamps and bumper that has a sporty upward curve. There is the unmistakable Mk7 Golf family tie when the Tiguan is viewed from the side thanks to the flared wheel arches, rear sloping roofline and strong shoulder line. At the back, we can see the outwardly sloping rear glass, wrap around tail lamps and contrast coloured bumper which manages to give the car a sporty touch.
The cabin is pretty much the same as that of Golf hatchback right down to the layout of the elements. However, this car gets contrast coloured seats and door panels to give a sporty touch. The boot space has been pegged at 615litres and with the rear seats folded down this number increases to 1665litres.
On the engine front, the Tiguan is being offered with four petrol and four diesel engines. The former is in the range of 123bhp to 234bhp while the latter is in the range of 118bhp to 240bhp. Save for the base models, all the other engines can also be had with the optional 4MOTION AWD system. The Tiguan will be available in three trim levels Trendline, ComfortLine and Highline.
The car has been unveiled but there is no confirmed date as to when it will go into production at the German automaker’s plant in Mexico where it will be built in five-seater and seven-seater configurations.
