Hyundai is set to enter the ever growing utility vehicles’ segment in India with an entry-level MPV. According to a report, the manufacturer is working on an MPV codenamed as 'IP'.
The seven-seater MPV is expected to be based on the Hexa Space concept, which was exhibited at the 2012 Auto Expo. With front-wheel-drive architecture, the vehicle will have a monocoque body shell. It is too early to comment about the design language, but we can expect Hyundai to keep the styling in line with its current range of vehicles.
The new MPV is expected to use both petrol as well as turbocharged diesel engines. Apart from the standard manual transmission, an automatic gearbox might also be offered.
At present, the utility vehicles segment is growing substantially and about half a million units are being sold per year. The segment accounts for almost 21 per cent of the overall market in our country. The advent of the 'IP' will mark Hyundai's entry into the MPV segment of vehicles and we can expect it to go on sale in 2017. It will then go up against the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Honda Mobilio, Renault Lodgy and Toyota Innova. Apart from this, the Korean manufacturer also plans to have five products in the segment in the coming 3-4 years.
