Korean auto giant Hyundai has been making cars with hybrid technology, however, it has never competed directly with the world’s best-selling hybrid, the Toyota Prius. But now with its new four-door hybrid model under development, Hyundai is set to lock horns with the Prius.
Spotted on test a couple of months ago, Hyundai's upcoming Prius rival has been spied again. The vehicle is expected to launch next year with the underpinnings of the new generation Elantra.
Not much is known about this new model although Hyundai is expected to combine a 1.6-litre, four cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor in a parallel setup, as well as a small lithium-ion battery.
Inside the cabin, the car will sport a design similar to Hyundai's current models, however, there will be a big screen displaying the working of the hybrid tech, like in the Prius. We expect Hyundai India to showcase this new model next year at a major international auto show.
