Hyundai Motors, the world’s fifth-largest car manufacturer, has decided to make India its global export hub for small cars. HS Lheem, MD, HMIL, said that India will be used for manufacturing and exporting their small cars.
Mr. Lheem also said that the upcoming i20 hatchback will be manufactured solely in India. It will be revealed to the world in September at the Paris Motor Show. HMIL will not phase out the Getz once the i20 is launched. The latter model will be priced a little above the Getz. The Santro will soldier on as well, despite rumors of its being phased out. No price range was announced, but the i20 will compete with the Skoda Fabia and Ford Fusion.
We think that Hyundai are doing the right thing by not phasing the Getz out – the introduction of the i20 will probably lower the older car’s price, making it a value-for-money proposition, which can only benefit the sales of the Getz, which is a competent car even today. If the success of the i30 in Europe is anything to go by, the i20 will be one Hyundai worth putting your hard-earned money down on.
