Hyundai has one omission in an otherwise complete lineup of models: that of a small sedan. The Verna, while extremely competent, is still quite expensive and there is no real replacement for the Accent. There is good news now, though, with confirmation of an i10-based compact sedan.
The rumours that an i10-based sedan is under development have been doing the rounds for a while now, but it is only recently that the chairman of Hyundai Turkey has stated that the 2014 i10, which is the next-generation car, will have a compact sedan based on the same platform. It will be positioned between the i10 and the i20.
This is especially good news for India, as a small sedan will fill a gap that we're sure Hyundai has been looking to fill for some time now, especially thanks to the upcoming engine plant which will give them the option of smaller and cheaper diesel powertrains for the Indian market. We expect the car to be unveiled later this calendar year, with a 2014 model year launch. The Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze will have tough competition from the Koreans, we're sure.
