After the Honda Accord and the Nissan Teana, yet another premium luxury sedan has been taken off the Indian market following low demand for large sedans from mainstream automakers. This time it’s the Sonata which has been canned by Hyundai India.
Launched in India in 2012, the sixth-generation Sonata was appreciated for its striking looks and the powerful drive-train. However, the lack of a diesel engine under its hood meant the Sonata was never up there to really compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Passat and the segment leader Skoda Superb. The Sonata, on the other hand, had to make do with a 2.4-litre petrol engine developing 201bhp of power and 250Nm of torque.
Now although the Sonata continues to be listed on Hyundai India’s webpage, one can expect the model to be phased out once the existing stock is cleared off. As for a successor, sadly Hyundai India currently has no plans to bring the seventh-generation model that came out in March last year.
