Hyundai is now selling a Sportz, LPG-powered, variant of the previous generation i10 for Rs 4.74 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It had previously been offering the Sportz variant only with the 1.2-litre Kappa engine but as we had reported on September 24, Hyundai dealers had stopped taking bookings for the 1.2-litre Kappa engined variants of the last generation i10 marking the end of its production run.
The Hyundai Sportz i10 is powered by the 1.1-litre petrol engine that produces 68bhp and 99.08Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The petrol tank is of 35 litres while the LPG tank is 34 litres and can be switched on the fly. The feature list, accessories package and safety equipment are exactly the same as the standard cars Sportz variant.
While the Hyundai’s official website does not list the 1.2-litre Kappa engine on its price page, the engine and related variants are still listed in the official brochure of the i10 hatchback. It now seems that the i10 is a budget hatchback while the Grand i10 with its 1.1-litre three-cylinder diesel engine has now become a premium offering. Hyundai is also offering CNG kits for the i10 hatchback but these are fitted at the dealer level.
With the cost of petrol still at a high point it seems that LPG has become a popular alternative. Many consumers whose commute does not reach the level required to own a diesel will see this as a cheaper option.
