Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) has received the Green Award from the Tamil Nadu government in the large industries category (North Zone) for the year 2011-12. HMIL was felicitated for its sustainable water and energy efficient manufacturing practices.
The award aims to recognise the initiatives taken by the industry in safeguarding the environment and encourages corporates to become more environmentally responsible. Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa gave the award to R Sethuraman, director-finance and corporate affairs at a function held in Chennai.
The company’s efforts to be eco-friendly and self-sustainable includes the use of two reverse osmosis plant making it a zero discharge facility. It has also created four rain water harvesting plants having a total capacity of 2.75 lakh kilo litres. In terms of power consumption, the Korean automaker has installed solar water heaters, solar light pies and has extensively used LEDs for its lighting needs.
