While Honda has a Type R and Nissan has Nismo, Hyundai is planning its own range of R-Spec/N-Spec products. While there are the R-Spec models like the Veloster and the Genesis Coupe/Sedan, Hyundai is planning to introduce this nomenclature for its more regular models. The first of the products to receive this treatment would be the i20.
According to rumours the R-Spec i20 will get a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine churning out 250bhp. It seems like Hyundai wants to create a road-going version of the i20 WRC car. Volkswagen also sold the Polo R WRC, a limited edition model, however it had a 2.0-litre TSI engine unlike the rumoured R-Spec i20.
This could be a step in the right direction for the Korean carmaker as their products were criticised for not so good handling. The R-Spec variants will need re-engineered suspension setups which in turn would benefit their regular road going versions.
